Publisher Spaghetti Cat and independent developer Sergey Bolshakov have launched an open playtest for Midnight Souls, a 2D adventure RPG headed to PC via Steam. The playtest is available through September 22 and includes roughly an hour of content from the game’s opening chapter.
Midnight Souls follows a teenager who travels to the provincial town of Camomile Peaks to meet a girl he first encountered online. What begins as a date soon takes a darker turn as he becomes caught up in the town’s mysteries. The story also follows his struggles with fear and self-doubt, his interactions with local residents, and his efforts to take care of his cat, Charlie.
The playtest features story-driven exploration, dialogue, a day-and-night cycle, minigames, and a progression system tied to finding specific items. Players can explore around six locations containing roughly 26 rooms while interacting with more than 10 characters. An inventory system and automatic and manual save options are also included.
Some dialogue and artwork remain placeholders, while the environment and character visuals are described as close to their final versions. The build supports English and Russian and includes four original music tracks.
The developers have also slipped a few deliberately mundane details into the playtest. Players can collect around 30 items, including six glass bottles, visit four merchants, and make use of a zero-interest savings account.
Feedback from the open playtest will be used during the remaining development period. The full version of Midnight Souls is currently scheduled to launch for PC via Steam in Q2 2027.
