Untitled Goose Game developer House House has launched its new cooperative multiplayer adventure Big Walk, offering groups of up to 12 players the chance to get lost in the Australian bush together.

Published by Firewatch and Thank Goodness You’re Here! publisher Panic, Big Walk is available now on PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. The game normally costs $19.99, although a limited-time 25% launch discount is currently available.

PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers can also download Big Walk as part of their membership on PS5.

Big Walk supports up to 12 players with full crossplay

Big Walk can be played by groups of between two and 12 people, with cross-platform multiplayer allowing PC, PS5, and Nintendo Switch 2 players to join the same adventure.

The game takes place in an open landscape inspired by Wilsons Promontory National Park on Australia’s south-east coast. Players must explore the wilderness, complete cooperative challenges, and use a collection of increasingly strange tools to keep in contact with one another.

Proximity voice chat plays a major role, with voices fading over long distances, echoing through enclosed spaces, becoming muffled behind walls, and crackling through walkie-talkies.

There will also be situations in which players cannot speak, forcing them to communicate by pointing, waving, gesturing, or simply flailing their arms around in the hope that somebody understands.

Available equipment includes walkie-talkies, binoculars, laser pointers, megaphones, flares, whiteboards, cowbells, and what House House describes as “a big golden head.”

Players can unlock new ways to move around the world, investigate what lies beyond a mysterious wall, or ignore the adventure entirely and spend time watching the sunset. You can also steal your friend’s binoculars and kick them into the ocean, which will presumably test the strength of your relationship more effectively than any formal puzzle.

House House says it should take a group around 10 to 15 hours to reach Big Walk’s first ending. At least one other player is required, meaning there is no solo option for those hoping to enjoy a peaceful hike without somebody ringing a cowbell in their ear.

A discounted bundle containing Big Walk and viral climbing game PEAK is also available through Steam. The bundle provides an additional 10% discount for players purchasing both games or those who already own PEAK.

Big Walk began as a lockdown prototype

House House began developing Big Walk during the COVID lockdowns as an experiment in creating an online multiplayer game. What was originally expected to be a small prototype eventually grew into a six-year project.

“Big Walk is our attempt to capture our favourite parts of playing games together online,” House House’s Stuart Gillespie-Cook said. “We started working on it during COVID lockdown, when that was often the main way we’d spend time with each other, and we’ve really tried to dial into the dynamics that make for a special shared experience.”

Gillespie-Cook said the studio wanted to recreate the unusual ways people communicate through characters in an online world while maintaining the spontaneous conversations and “manic energy” of spending several days hiking with friends.

“When we started working on Big Walk in 2020, we thought we were making a small, proof-of-concept prototype, as a way to learn the ropes of online multiplayer games,” House House’s Jake Strasser added.

“We figured we’d spend a few months making this thing; figure out the basics; and then move on to our Big Ambitious Game. But we just kept having so much fun playing it that we didn’t want to stop working on it.”

Big Walk’s soundtrack was composed by AKSFX and contains approximately two hours of original music presented through several in-game radio stations. The soundtrack is also available separately through music streaming platforms.

Big Walk is out now on Steam for PC and Mac, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2.
