G-Mode has announced NEXT: THE PORTOPIA SERIAL MURDER CASE, a full remake of the Famicom version of Yuji Horii’s mystery adventure The Portopia Serial Murder Case for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam in 2027, with Japanese listed as the only supported language.
Yuji Horii, creator of the original The Portopia Serial Murder Case, is serving as original story creator and executive director.
The Portopia Serial Murder Case first launched for the PC-6001 through Enix in June 1983 before being ported to numerous Japanese computers. The Famicom version followed on November 29, 1985, becoming the console’s first adventure game. This remake is specifically described as a full remake of that Famicom release.
Fans can anticipate five investigation files told from shifting perspectives. These scenarios take place in 1980s Kobe and introduce a new cast of characters as players investigate secrets connected to the murders from the original story.
The gameplay retains the menu-driven, command-selection text adventure structure. Players select different investigative commands while gathering witness testimony and physical evidence to piece together the circumstances behind the serial murders.
Kyoji Asano of WIT Studio is handling character designs. Pianist and composer Shinya Kiyozuka is handling the soundtrack, with more than 30 new songs composed for the game.
Characters from The Hokkaido Serial Murder Case: The Okhotsk Disappearance will also appear. That mystery adventure was similarly created under Horii’s supervision, with members of its development staff involved in the new Portopia project. ORION PROJECT is overseeing planning and production.
A playable version will be available at Tokyo Game Show 2026 from September 17 through September 21 and will feature the opening portion of the game. The TGS build will not feature voices, although the finished release is planned to include full voice acting.
