Bluey's Happy Snaps is a family-friendly photo safari

Bluey and Bingo have found a camera and it's resulting in a surprisingly engaging adventure for all ages.

When it comes to kids shows, few are hotter right now than Bluey. Kids and their parents have come to embrace the tales of a young Australian dog and her lovable family, so there's some pressure that comes with creating a video game based on this property. Fortunately, Disney Dreamlight Valley creator Gameloft appears to be up to the task. I may not be a Bluey expert, but it didn't stop me from checking out Bluey's Happy Snaps during my time at Gamescom.

Announced earlier this year, Bluey's Happy Snaps follows Bluey and her sister, Bingo, who have found an old instant camera. Yes, before the days of iPhones and digital cameras, people took photos with instant cameras, which would operate with film and produce a photo within seconds of one being snapped. Bluey and Bingo get the idea to fill out a scrapbook and it's up to the player to take the best pictures they can. For parents who might be reading this, think of it like "Baby's First Pokemon Snap."

The Gamescom demo took me out to a campsite, where Bluey's family has taken a trailer out to set up camp. The main objective is to take photos of various toys and animals that are scattered across the woods. Bluey's free to roam wherever she wants, seeking out whatever she needs to shoot. Some of it might be hidden, so it might take a keen set of observational eyes to find the right target. If a second player wants to help, they can drop in or out at any time as Bingo. If more help is needed, the pause menu has a Photo Clues page, which offers up some hints on where to go next.

Snapping any photos of objects on the objective list will reward players with a sticker for Bluey's scrapbook. Stickers can be placed anywhere on any of its pages, so kids are encouraged to let their imaginations run wild. Taking photos of special targets can also unlock coloring book pages, which can be filled in with different paint colors, stamps, paint patterns, and collected stickers for further creative expression.

I'm not a Bluey viewer, but I know a good photography game when I see it. Bluey's Happy Snaps looks to be a wholesome endeavor, enhanced by the show's voice cast all coming in to make this feel like it's another episode of the series. Gameloft also adds in fun little quirks, like the ability for Bluey and Bingo to pose for each other's pictures and also for Bluey to pass the camera over to another character so that she can get in a shot. There looks to be a lot for Bluey fans, young and old, to enjoy, but it'll be a little while longer before the full game is ready. As revealed by today's Nintendo Direct, Bluey's Happy Snaps is coming to PC and consoles on October 15.
